Isn't it interesting how some people have just beautiful fingernails, and others have paper thing, bendy, terrible fingernails? I fall into the second category. My nails will grow pretty quickly, but they are very....floppy. They bend and break and split and are just very weak in general. I wonder if it is a vitamin thing, or just the way some people are?

I think it is just the way we are. I am taking an over the counter mineral Biotin. It is helping some and maybe if I went to the manicurist when they were out a decent length and let her put something to help the peeling etc They would last longer.
I certainly don't know anything about fingernails, but I do know I'm glad that I'm not a girl, because I would never be able to maintain nice fingernails. I have such a bad habit of biting them that I never have to cut them, so it's a good thing I'm a guy who is not gothic or punk and would never paint them ! I'm sure if you do some searches on Google you could probably find out some very helpful information on what you could do to help your nails. Take care and enjoy the rest of the weekend, bye for now.

I think it's genes and age. I used to have really nice nails when younger and kept them about half an inch long. Now, at 61, they chip and break off, especially with this job I have now. I try to keep them polished on days off but they are not what they used to be. With yard work and garden work coming up they won't be long at all.
It could be an indicator of health, but probably not. The small ridges in my nails are one of the symptoms of thyroid disorder- which I do have. Even when my levels are good and they are smooth, they are naturally very square and look like shovels- not pretty!
it is interesting:) mine used to be thinnier and bendier but lately they've been getting harder and I'm getting those verticle ridges. I guess this is why so many older women wear nail polish:) ack - I don't really care what they look like these days as long as they don't break:)
Part of it is the genes....I can grow them but they either break off or tear. I have started taking Biotin and hope it helps. But what really helps me is using OPI products. There is a nail protector that really works. I can feel it soaking into my nailbed when I use it. Also be careful of the type of nail polish remover you use ~ the acetate kind really is harsh on nails.
