  • This has turned out to be a pretty nice week!  It was very busy because the flu has hit, so now every time anyone gets the slightest fever or runny nose, their parents are rushing in them in to the doctor for a flu test.  That is very good for business, but also not entirely necessary.  Either way, it keeps us busy!!!

An interesting question/topic came up this week.  It has left me with the following question:  What is your definition of "poor"?  There are so many different ways that people think of things when they are thinking of that term, and it is actually very interesting.

There is a movie night at church tomorrow-the movie is called October Baby.  I've never seen it.  I think we will probably go. There will be a different movie playing in the kid's room, because I guess October Baby is rated PG-13.  I can't remember which one they are playing for the kids.

    Hmmm...nothing else for tonight.

  • It's true that it's better safe than be sorry when someone is sick, but when there are people going to the doctor over super small colds, that's just overreacting ! Usually I'm only sick once a year and it's such a small cold that passes in a couple of days and than I'm fine again. Well I think there are different levels of how one can describe poor. Obviously the first thought that comes to mind would be all of the homeless people who have no job, no home, and almost nothing to their name. These are the people that need the most help as they are the most vulnerable.

However, and this is evidently clear during these tough economic times, there are many people who are working, sometimes more than one job, that can still hardly afford to pay all of the bills and take care of these kids. These people are living in near poverty, and they deserve to be able to work themselves ahead in their lives. Companies should not be allowed to pay people wages that clearly aren't livable. Yet a lot of people with jobs are making salaries which would only be beneficial to someone working part time in highschool. This is something that needs to change.

And I'm sure there are so many people in the middle class that are struggling and if measures aren't taken to help these families, they too might end up "poor." I've never heard of that movie before, but it should be a nice surprise to see how it goes. Take care and have a wonderful weekend, bye for now.

  • My definition of poor... I don't have a well thought out one, but I would think that poor means struggling to provide the simplest basics- enough food to not be hungry, a place to live, enough clothing to be decently covered. I guess I think being in poverty and being poor are synonymous.

  • Good question....I think of poor as not being able to provide food and decent shelter for your family as poor. Noooo...to be honest I also tend to class some people who have more than enough but not a lot as 'poorer'. It's not right and when I think about it I feel bad but it's something I subconsciously do.
