Being Green
This morning I was reading an article out of a magazine and people were talking about different ways to conserve and be better for the environment. It was interesting..here are some of the things they suggested, and some of my thoughts:
1) Walk to work. I can't do that one. It would take me about two hours to get there I think, and I might die of a heart attack in the summer when it is 110 degrees by 9:00am. As far as I can remember, I have never lived in a place where walking to work would have been realistic for me. I have always lived further away from my job, although possibly in the past I may have been within bike riding distance.
2) Use reusable shopping bags: I do have some of the reusable bags, but I use them for things other than groceries. I get the plastic sacks when I buy groceries, and then I save them and use them for bathroom trashcan liners, and for scooping the cat litter into.
3) Turning off the water when brushing teeth: I have always done that, and can't imagine not. I think that was ingrained in us when we were really little because for awhile when I was small, we didn't have any kind of water at our house. We had to haul water home in huge water tanks that were in the back of the truck. After awhile my parents saved up money and had a well put in, but we were always taught to conserve water. I remember that my ex husband did NOT turn the water off when he brushed his teeth and I was just horrified by how wasteful that was. I'm pretty sure that over time he did start turning the water off, but now I can't remember.
4) Buying large containers instead of individual serve sizes, and then filling up your reusable Tupperware at home: This one saves on waste from packaging materials, and trash going into landfills. Also some of the items would end up coming in reusable large containers. I do this in spells. I'll be really good about it for awhile and then I kind of bomb out.
That is all I remember.

I think you really have to be committed to being green to do all the stuff that they suggest. I try but I am like you, sometimes and some things.
I think it all comes down to what can a person do to help cut down their carbon footprint. Obviously not everyone will be able to do everything, but we can all do something. I will admit I keep the water running, and not to use an excuse, but it rains so much here we never run out ! I do use tupper wares everyday for my lunches at work, and I walk and take the bus, so I am not driving. And you could always try biking places at times when you would use your car. I'm sure there are at least a few places you could go by bike.
It definitely sounds like you are really aware of the environment though.... certainly most than the average person, and you certainly do your share to cut back when possible, so you should be proud of yourself ! Take care and have a wonderful weekend, bye for now.

I am not into all this "green" stuff, as it's just common sense things I did as a kid. When we moved to the country our well went dry after 2 months so I went with my grandfather on the 15 mile each way ride in an old pickup truck with 6 galvanized trash cans to get water from our old house that we rented out. We did this 3 times a week until they had saved enough money to dig another well and hook it up to the pump. We had to use an outhouse till everything was done.
I never let water run when brushing teeth. I use my plastic bags for food scraps that go into the trash and for picking up after Charlie when we walk him.
I don't like wasting water as we have to pay for it and it also is a bad thing when people in other countries have to literally walk miles just to get a few gallons.
I save the little containers with the deli meat to put my batch cooking in when I freeze it for meals later. This way I don't have to buy containers to put the food in.
I am hoping my little veggie garden makes it. It is trial and error so far but I plan on doing it again next year too.
I couldn't walk the 15 miles to work each day either and too dangerous to ride a bike.
